"We’re in the midst of a nationwide and statewide housing crisis. But homeownership remains one of the most accessible ways for low-and moderate-income families and communities of color to build generational wealth and gain a foothold in the middle class. The barriers and inequities, particularly for people of color, remain immense. According to a report by the New Jersey Institute of Social Justice, some 77% of New Jersey’s white households own their home or a home, compared to just 41% of Black households.
As New Jerseyans struggle with multiple affordability crises, more homeowners or prospective homeowners in underserved neighborhoods or communities of color are turning to the concept of renting out part or all of their multifamily homes and becoming small landlords. New Jersey Citizen Action has a program that educates New Jerseyans on this topic, and we encourage anyone interested to sign up for our webinars and workshops. We also wanted to share a few perspectives from our work in this area in this blog and blogs to come."
