Public Enemy No. 1 (Of 9)

Capital Games — Tuesday, March 6, 2007

A left-leaning group named Rep. Scott Garrett the New Jersey middle class's "Public Enemy No. 1" for his votes so far in the 110th Congress.

Among the votes cited by Americans United for Change were Garrett's opposition to raising the minimum wage and cutting interest rates on college loans.

Eight other members of Congress, all Republicans, were also cited in similar news releases today as their states' No. 1 enemies. They were: Michelle Bachmann (MN-6); Marilyn Musgrave (CO-4); Jeff Fortenberry (NE-1); Steve King (IA-5); Bill Sali (ID-1); Brian Bilbray (CA-50); John Doolittle (CA-4); Roy Blunt (MO-7).

"These folks have similarly irritating voting records," said Americans United press secretary Jeremy Funk.

Americans United's new president, Brad Woodhouse, formerly worked as a spokesman for Jon Corzine when he was a senator and head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Woodhouse said in a recent email announcing his appointment that the group's core mission was "to use high intensity, political campaign style tactics and methods to give voice to progressive issues and causes and to hold President Bush and his allies in Congress accountable for standing in the way of improving the lives of ordinary Americans and advancing issues, like privatization, which hurt American families."
