As Mikie Sherrill takes her place at the head of our state government, longtime advocates like myself are hopeful she will stand by her pledge to make government more transparent and accountable.
But this will mean standing up to the entrenched corporate interests that too often control party politics in our state. This won’t be easy, given the influence they wield over many state policymakers and leaders.
I’ve spent more than two decades fighting for causes that include a healthy environment, good government reform, and policies that lift our poor and working families. To make progress on any of these fronts, advocates like me have fought David-and-Goliath-like struggles to win support from the New Jersey Legislature and past governors, to overcome opposition from well-financed corporate interests. State lawmakers and elected officials too often prioritize these interests over the needs of everyday New Jerseyans.
