The Affordable Care Act (ACA) turns 16 today. We should be celebrating this landmark health care law, which drove the uninsured rate down to historic lows, made it illegal for companies to deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, and helped ensure families weren’t one illness away from financial ruin.

But on the ACA’s anniversary, countless New Jerseyans now face the fiscal cliff the law was intended to protect them from. The Trump administration, with the collusion of New Jersey Republican Congressmen Tom Kean, Jr., Jeff Van Drew and Chris Smith, stripped $900 Billion from federal health care funding. These unprecedented cuts threaten the well-being of millions of state residents dependent on the ACA Marketplace (also known as GetCoveredNJ) or NJ FamilyCare/Medicaid for affordable health care coverage.
