TRENTON — New Jersey, a state often synonymous with the corrupt antics of politicians at all levels of government, has too many government watchdogs keeping too many eyes trained on taxpayer dollars, according to one of its most powerful elected officials.
It's a problem Senate President Nick Scutari, D-Union, hopes to fix — and fix it fast.
If signed into law, a new bill proposed by Scutari would essentially fold much of the Office of the State Comptroller's responsibilities into the State Commission of Investigation, turning two watchdog agencies into one-and-a-half.
The bill comes just before Thanksgiving, at the start of the lame-duck legislative period best known for controversial legislation getting an express pass to the governor's desk at a time when public attention is diverted.
