NJ expands job-protected family leave to 400K more workers

An estimated 400,000 additional New Jersey workers are now eligible for job-protected family leave after a sweeping expansion of the state’s leave laws took effect July 17.

Then-Gov. Phil Murphy signed the legislation into law earlier this year. The measure broadens eligibility under the New Jersey Family Leave Act while extending those protections to many workers receiving  and  benefits.

Under the new law, employers with 15 or more employees are now covered by the . That figure marks a drop from the previous threshold of 30. Workers also qualify much sooner, with eligibility reduced from 12 months to three months of employment, and from 1,000 hours worked to 250 hours. The legislation is expected to extend leave rights to nearly 400,000 additional workers across the state.
