New Jersey needs to generate more electricity, but a ratepayer watchdog warns that proposed legislation to build a nuclear power plant in the Garden State could hike average customers electric bills by up to $55 a month.
The bill, called the New Jersey Energy Reliability and Affordability Act, which earlier this week cleared the Senate Environment and Energy Committee, aims to give incentives to developers to build advanced nuclear reactors in the the state.
Under the proposal, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities would solicit interest and information for the construction of at least one advanced nuclear reactor to generate at least 1,100 megawatts of electricity in the state, enough to power an estimated 1.1 million homes.
